An occlusal adjustment corrects the alignment of the way your teeth come together (the bite). Loose, shifted, crowded, or missing teeth can result in an unevenly distributed occlusal contacts. Occlusal adjustment eliminates irregular pressure on one side of the mouth, and sometimes needs to be done gradually in more appointments. Once your bite is adjusted, your teeth will meet properly. This procedure causes minimal pain, and only a little discomfort. The adjustment is made by using a dental drill using a fine filing stone. In addition to the actual adjustment, removal mouthpieces (nightguargs) are also utilized, to protect the tooth surface, and relax the jaw muscles once the adjustment is completed.
In our office we evaluate patients with loose or shifted teeth and an improper occlusion, patients who grind or clench their teeth and have an uneven bite and pressure distribution in the mouthand their benefit for occlusal adjustments. Sometimes tooth sensitivity can be corrected through an occlusal adjustment as the treatment reduces pressure on that sensitive tooth.
