Orthodontics Near You
For many people, a uniform smile is an invaluable tool when making a good first impression. Not only can this positively influence one’s self-confidence, but it also aids one in maintaining good hygiene. Misaligned teeth can hinder your ability to brush and floss properly, which, in turn, contributes to cavities, infections, and even bite problems. With that said, there are a couple of different ways you can go about correcting your smile, including traditional braces and clear aligner therapy. We offer both these methods at Access Dental Centre. Our skilled dentist near you, Dr. Vikas Raj, is ready to meet and walk you through this process so you know what to expect. Call today!
Why Do I Need Orthodontic Treatment?
Tooth misalignment can take many forms, including:
- Overbites (the upper teeth are further forward)
- Underbites (the lower teeth are further forward)
- Crossbites
- Overcrowding
- Unsightly spaces between teeth
The form of treatment that Dr. Raj recommends is case dependent. Clear aligner therapy and traditional braces are both effective and reliable solutions. Your smile will be carefully examined via panoramic x-rays and a visual inspection to determine which option is best. Most orthodontists recommend metal braces for severe cases of misalignment as they are the most effective method of correction.
Styles of Braces
For patients interested in traditional braces, the following options are available:
- Traditional: Metal brackets are attached to each tooth, and a matching wire is threaded through each one. If needed, elastic bands are also provided. This framework exerts pressure on your smile, triggering movement over a prolonged period. Traditional braces boast a very high success rate, as they can remedy various bite challenges. This option is also the most visible when you eat, laugh, or smile.
- Ceramic: Ceramic braces are identical to metal ones, aside from being more discreet. This material may be more prone to discoloration when you drink coffee, tea, wine, smoke, or eat dark foods.
- Lingual: Lingual braces are also very similar to traditional braces, but they are fastened onto the backside of your smile instead of the front. This style offers another subtle alternative for patients anxious about acquiring treatment.
- Clear Aligners: Most often, recipients of clear aligner therapy acquire Invisalign, the most well-known form of clear aligner orthodontics. This method provides reliable results in a way that’s discreet and comfortable. Like braces, the aligner trays used are customized to fit the dimensions of your smile via 3D impressions. Dr. Raj will outline a plan, which visualizes the outcome of your treatment. You must wear your trays daily for 20-22 hours minimum to obtain your desired results. Every 2 weeks, you’ll switch out your current trays for a new pain, as this ensures that your progress continues.
Orthodontics for Children vs Adults
Braces work better for pre-teens and teenagers because their smiles and jaws are still developing. But that doesn’t mean that adults cannot acquire this treatment either. Originally, Access Dental Centre offered braces solely to teenagers, but more and more adults are eager to straighten their teeth and correct malocclusion.
Poorly aligned teeth can arise due to factors like genetics, bad habits like thumb or finger sucking, poor nutrition, and mouth breathing. If you or your child are dealing with any of these problems, we recommend visiting our practice for a consultation with our Kelowna dentist.
