Sedation Options at Access Dental
Your comfort and well-being are very important to us. We use the latest and safest tools and methods to make sure your treatment goes well and you have a great experience.
We offer four types of sedation at our practice, including:
- Local Anesthesia: This medication blocks nerve signals to numb the treatment area and reduce discomfort. It can be used as a cream, gel, or injection. If injected, you might feel a quick pinch. The numbing effect will last for several hours and will slowly wear off after your procedure.
- Laughing Gas: Nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas,” helps you feel happy and relaxed. You breathe it in through a mask over your nose, and it starts working quickly. You’ll stay awake while Dr. Vikas Raj works on your teeth, and you can ask questions anytime if you need to.
- Oral Sedation: Before your appointment, you’ll take a pill a few hours in advance to help the medicine start working. Most people end up sleeping during the treatment. It’s best to have someone drive you home because you might feel sleepy as the medicine wears off.
- IV Sedation: IV sedation is given through a needle in your vein. You won’t be fully asleep like with general anesthesia, but you’ll feel very relaxed, almost like you’re in a deep sleep. We’ll keep an eye on your vital signs and adjust the sedation if needed. It’s best to have someone drive you home afterward.
Types of Sedation Dentistry
Minimal Sedation
Minimal sedation uses a local numbing medicine and either a pill or laughing gas to make you feel more relaxed during your dental procedure. You’ll stay awake but feel more comfortable. This is a good choice if you need a bit of help to feel calm. You won’t feel pain with minimal sedation, and there’s very little risk. You’ll need someone to drive you home afterward because you won’t be able to drive or use machinery for 24 hours.
Moderate Sedation
Moderate sedation is a popular choice because it keeps you relaxed and sleepy. You’ll feel calm and comfortable, and you’ll be able to follow simple instructions like “open your mouth.” You won’t be fully asleep, so you’ll breathe on your own and keep your natural reflexes. This makes the procedure safer and less expensive.
Our dentist will put a small tube in a vein in your arm or hand to give you the medicine. This helps the medicine work quickly, and the amount can be adjusted based on what you need. Our dentist, who is trained and certified in IV sedation, will work with another dentist to make sure you get the best care during your procedure.
Deep Sedation
Deep sedation is different from general anesthesia. During deep sedation, you won’t know what’s going on and might not remember the procedure. You’ll still breathe on your own, but you might need some help. Local anesthesia will make sure you don’t feel any pain.
If you’re very anxious about dental visits or have a strong gag reflex, we might recommend deep sedation. This involves using stronger medicines through an IV, similar to moderate sedation but stronger. Our dentists in Kelowna will make sure you’re comfortable and well cared for during the procedure.
