Sometimes the unexpected happens.
We understand that life is full of surprises. Some surprises won’t leave you smiling. Luckily, we are here for you and your dental emergencies.

The most distressing problem for many is having dental issues. These usually start off as minor issues that grow into bigger problems due to neglect and lack of treatment. There are a couple of dental emergencies that are common, and we may encounter at some point in our lives. When this happens, call an emergency dentist in Kelowna to help.

A fractured, chipped, cracked, knocked out or broken tooth is considered a dental emergency. When a patient experiences one of these dental emergencies, it requires immediate attention and treatment from a dental professional. Whatever the situation is, calling a emergency dentist in Kelowna is vital to save the tooth and to deal with the pain that accompanies it.

Toothaches
A toothache is a common problem people may experience at one point or another in their lifetimes. However, children and teenagers are mostly affected by this dental issue. This may be due to impacted food stuck in between or within the tooth’s cavity. In some instances, brushing or flossing can help.

However, if the pain persists, there may be other causes such as wisdom teeth eruption, tooth trauma, tooth decay or tooth fractures. When this happens, you can clean the area with warm water, check for impacted food and aim for its removal. You can also apply a cold compress to the area in case of swelling, but the most important action is to talk to a dentist for professional advice.

Dental Avulsions
A dental avulsion, also known as a knocked-out tooth, can happen unexpectedly. When this happens, you have to recover the tooth, handling it only by the crown. Rinse off dirt or debris with water carefully so as not to scrape or scrub the tooth. Gently insert the tooth in its original socket with a bit of pressure or place the tooth in the cheek pouch. If this happens to younger kids, you can submerge the tooth in saliva or milk. It is not recommended to put the tooth back in the kid’s mouth due to the risk of choking. The tooth should not be dried during transport. Seek an emergency dentist at Access Dental in Kelowna immediately.

Dental Intrusion
Dental intrusion, also known as a tooth pushed into the jawbone can be caused by trauma. Call the dentist and let them decide on whether to wait for the tooth to descend naturally or to schedule an emergency root canal treatment. When this happens, rinse the mouth with cold water, put ice packs on the swollen areas, take Tylenol for pain and seek an emergency dentist nearby immediately.
Tooth Luxation
Tooth luxation, lateral displacement or extrusion. This is defined as the displacement of a tooth in a non-axial direction. The tooth could be positioned in a labial, lingual, or lateral direction. In this case, it is important that you can describe the orientation of the tooth after trauma. You can place a cold, moist compress on the affected area and take Tylenol for pain. It is important for you to visit an emergency dentist to have it treated immediately to prevent any form of infection.
Mouth and Jaw Injuries
An injured cheek, lip or tongue can lead to bleeding. It can be caused by an accidental cut or bite. When this happens, apply firm and direct pressure in the area with the use of a clean cloth or gauze. Apply ice to the area to reduce swelling. In cases of extreme bleeding, it is important to seek out an emergency dentist in Kelowna
 immediately.

A fractured jaw should be kept immobilized. In case of a head injury or head trauma, rush to an emergency room to check for delayed concussion or internal bleeding. This is mandatory whether the person is conscious or not.

These are the common dental emergencies that require immediate intervention. There is no sense of waiting as it can become worse with time. It is important to intervene soon after it happens, to prevent problematic damages in the future. Also, be sure to contact our emergency dentist near you. Our emergency dentistry near you can help save your smile, don’t hesitate to contact our clinic at Access Dental in Kelowna.
