What is Gum Disease?
Periodontal (gum) disease is insidious. It is an infection of the gums that starts out as plaque, an opaque film on the teeth, and later hardens to form tartar. As tartar accumulates, it harbors bacteria that attack the soft tissue around the teeth. This is the early stage of gum disease known as Gingivitis. Left untreated, Gingivitis becomes Periodontitis. Periodontitis ultimately destroys the tissue surrounding your teeth and the bone that holds your teeth in place.

Bad breath and bleeding gums, are the few early warning signals. The disease advances silently, often without pain, and before you know it, you are losing your teeth and you don't know why.

When your gums become diseased...
Your entire immune system is weakened. After complete assessment of your periodontal status, our hygienists and dentist will create your specific recall program and give you the tricks for caring for your gums and teeth.

In the past, fear of painful dental surgery has kept people with gum disease from seeking the care they needed. Well, those days are gone forever. Not only do we offer non-surgical treatments for gum disease, but our latest advancements and high end pain-management strategies will leave you smiling!

How to Prevent Gum Disease
  • Flossing Strategy
You might consider using a product specially designed to clean between the teeth. For example, an interdental brush.
  • Rinse Your Mouth
Our team may recommend a special mouth rinse to reduce plaque build up in your mouth!
  • Use a Soft Tooth Brush.
To preserve your gums, we recommend our patients use a soft tooth brush.
  • Brush After Meals
We encourage all of our patients to brush after every meal or snack. If that is not possible, we recommend brushing a minimum of twice daily to prevent gum disease.
  • Come to Us
Come in for your regularly scheduled professional dental cleanings. We’ll scrape off that built up tartar and plaque!
  • Quit Tobacco Products
Quit smoking. Quit using tobacco products. Your gums will thank you!
  • Switch to Electric
We recommend using an electric tooth brush to clean your gums and teeth. Electric tooth brushes can clean up to 6 times better than a regular tooth brush.
  • Floss Everyday.
Try to floss everyday. We know it is tough to keep up with flossing, but IT WORKS!
