Tooth Extractions

Tooth Extractions Near You
Some people go all their lives without experiencing a serious dental issue. However, it can be more common for others to experience oral health issues and require treatment as a result. A common procedure is a tooth extraction. Tooth extractions can be carried out by Mission Hill Dental in St. Albert or an oral surgeon. There are a variety of reasons one might need a tooth extraction. There are also different kinds of tooth extractions near you. This information is listed below.

Simple Tooth Extractions in Kelwona
Usually, a simple tooth extraction involves a dentist extracted an affected tooth to prevent the damage from spreading further. This is typically recommended to those who are experiencing extreme sensitivity or suffering from advanced periodontal disease. In some cases, this can be a step towards preparation for an orthodontic treatment. A simple tooth extraction can also be done to remove a fractured or malformed tooth. Or it can be done to get rid of baby teeth or extra teeth that may be preventing adult teeth from forming. This is an action taken without the need for a major surgical procedure.

Wisdom Teeth Extractions in Kelowna
Adult teeth typically erupt between the ages of 6 and 7. However, between the ages of 17 and 25, the third molars, also known as wisdom teeth, erupt in the mouth. For some individuals, there is not enough room in the jaw for the wisdom teeth to comfortably and fully erupt, which result in impacted wisdom teeth. When the tooth erupts in a potentially harmful position, the dentist may recommend wisdom teeth extractions near you. This is because it can lead to problematic situations like the occurrence of cysts and tumors, damage to other teeth or infection.

Second molars can also be affected by an impacted wisdom tooth or teeth. An impacted wisdom tooth can also be a good breeding space for bacteria which may result to infection. Tooth crowding can also occur when impacted wisdom teeth are left in the mouth, which can cause tooth misalignment and secondary problems like TMD. Let’s take a look at after-care for wisdom teeth extractions at Access Dental in Kelowna.
After Tooth Extractions
Tooth extractions are dental procedures that should be taken seriously. Aftercare is essential for proper healing. After a tooth extraction, maintain pressure with a gauze pad placed over the area by biting it down gently. You can dampen the gauze sponge with water if you feel like it is drying out. Keep the pressure maintained with intervals of 45-60 minutes as needed. This is to be done until the bleeding lessens and stops altogether. The gauze should also be changed to prevent infection.

It is good to keep your head elevated and your activity level at a low during the healing period. This means avoiding activities that require you to exert too much effort, this contributes to decreasing the possibility of continuous bleeding. Once 48 hours have passed after the surgery, you can rinse your mouth with warm water and salt. This can be done every 1 to 2 hours. Stay away from mouth products that contain alcohol to prevent irritation. You can also start brushing areas around it but with caution not to touch the sutures and site. Swelling can be controlled by ice pack compression. Medications should also be taken accordingly. Make sure that the medications you are to take are recommended by your St. Albert dentist or oral surgeon.

Hydration is also essential. Refrain from smoking for the next three to four days to prevent infection. Avoid eating solid foods for a few days to avoid the risk of food getting stuck in the wound and difficulty eating. Complications such as bleeding, dry socket, numbness, swelling, and trismus may occur. If these symptoms occur, be sure to book an appointment with your dentist at Access Dental in Kelowna for proper treatment and handling.
