Tooth Bonding

Picture
What is Dental Bonding?
Dental bonding is a procedure that involves the application of a tooth-colored resin material (a durable plastic material) to the surface of the tooth, using a special light to harden and bond the material to the tooth. This is often done to restore or improve a person’s smile.

What is the Process of Dental Bonding?
Bonding at Access Dental in Kelowna is literally what the word implies. It’s a type of dental restoration in which plastic (composite resin) is bonded to the tooth to correct the damage of tooth decay, discoloration and other oral health challenges that disrupt the aesthetic appearance of a person’s tooth.

You can expect the following when you are seeking dental bonding as a restorative method:

  • Your dentist will use a shading guide to select the bonding material that best matches the color of your teeth.
  • Your dentist shall then proceed with etching the enamel of the tooth, after that applying a conditioning liquid to bond the materials to the tooth effectively.
  • Lastly, the bonding material is applied to your tooth. It is sculpted to the specifications of your tooth and a curing light is used to harden the bond material.
  • The dentist finishes by shaping and aligning the bonded tooth to make it uniform with the other natural teeth.
This whole process shouldn’t take more than an hour.

Advantages of Dental Bonding
Perhaps the major advantage of dental bonding is the ease of application. The dental bonding process takes roughly 30-60 minutes. Not much preparation is required beforehand, unlike other restorative procedures.

Dental bonding at Mission Hill Dental in St. Albert highly versatile in its application. It can be used to improve a variety of dental-related issues you may be facing. During the treatment, only a small portion of the tooth’s surface is removed. This reduces the risk of damaging the enamel.

Who is a Good Candidate?
There are many options to choose from for your dental restoration. Dental crowns, veneers, and bonds serve almost the same purpose. It is likely your
St. Albert dentist will recommend the need for dental bonding in order to treat minor cases of tooth decay, discoloration, broken or chipped teeth or to close the gap between your teeth.

Based on the state of the affected tooth, your dentist will recommend the treatment process you should use after a thorough examination. For example, not every tooth gap can be closed with bonding alone, in certain cases you may need additional orthodontic treatment.

How Long Does Dental Bonding Take?
After the initial consultation, you will visit your dentist for the application of the dental bond. This should take between 30 to 60 minutes per tooth.

How Long Does It Last?
A dental bond usually lasts between three to ten years, depending on how each patient’s oral hygiene practices. Your dental bond can last longer if you are able maintain a good oral hygiene and visit the dentist regularly for check-ups.
