Root Canal Therapy

Root Canal Therapy Near You
To maintain good oral health, it is recommended that we schedule an appointment at least two times a year with your dentist at Access Dental in Kelowna. This is essential for assessment, diagnosis, cleaning, and treatment if symptoms present themselves. Dental problems may be present, even with symptoms that go unnoticed. Most of the time, people find out they have a serious dental problem only when the issue has progressed. One major dental treatment that is necessary when a tooth is compromised is root canal therapy.

What is Root Canal Therapy in Kelowna.
This procedure is carried out in order to save and repair a tooth that is badly decayed and infected. During the procedure, the infected nerve and pulp are removed in order to try and save the tooth. Once they have been successfully removed, the tooth is cleaned thoroughly of debris remaining, before sealed for protection.

Why Does Tooth Pulp Need to Be Removed?
The pulp is removed in order to eliminate an abscess and the spread of infection to neighbouring teeth. When a tooth’s nerve tissue or pulp is damaged, a breakdown occurs, leaving bacteria free to multiply within it. When this happens, an abscess or a pus-filled pocket can start to form at the roots of the tooth. This can cause complications such as bone loss at the tip of the root, swelling that may spread to the face, head or neck area, and drainage problems extending outward from the root. If the tooth is infected enough, it can result in the necessary removal of the tooth.

What Damages a Tooth’s Nerve & Pulp?
The cause of damage to a nerve or pulp is usually repeated dental procedures, large fillings, trauma to the tooth due to cracking, chipping, or breakage. With these conditions, the tooth’s nerve and pulp can become an infection, inflamed and irritated.
Signs a Root Canal is Needed
Visiting a dental clinic in Kelowna can be helpful in determining whether you might need a root canal or not. If you experience prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, if there is a discoloration of the tooth, swelling, and tenderness nearby the gums, or when there is a recurring or a persistent pimple on the gums, you may need root canal therapy.
What Happens During Root Canal?
This is a procedure that requires proper diagnosis. This can be done by undergoing an x-ray examination to assess the shape of the root canals and if there is an infection in the surrounding bone. Once it has been determined you need root canal therapy, your dentist will schedule a follow-up appointment for treatment.

Local anesthesia will be applied to the area surrounding the teeth. A rubber dam will then be placed around the tooth to keep the area dry and saliva-free. An access hole will then be drilled at the top of the tooth to give way for the removal of the decayed nerve tissue and debris, along with the bacteria from the tooth.

A series of files that are increasing in diameter will be placed in the access hole and worked down the tooth to scrub and scrape it. Remaining debris will then be flushed with water or sodium hypochlorite. Then the tooth will be sealed to make sure it does not get infected again. A sealer paste and a rubber substance called gutta percha will then be used to fill the tooth’s interior. Other procedures will be performed if other restorations are necessary.

What to Expect
After the procedure, there will be some inflammation and sensitivity. However, your dentist may recommend the use of pain medications to help you get the healing period. Once it is completely healed, you can resume to caring for it like you typically would. Root canal therapy at Access Dental in Kelowna is a procedure that can save your tooth and get it back to its normal functioning. Early detection of dental problems is the key to preventing and treating problems.
